What is forgiveness? This word is so misunderstood. Everyone think they know what forgiveness is, but when you hear statements like:

“forgive not for others but so you can be free,”

you realize people don’t really know what they are talking about.

Forgiveness is canceling a debt. If I owe you a hundred dollars and you decide to forgive me of that debt, it means I don’t have to pay you the hundred dollars back. Think about it, how does that help you? You are one hundred dollars short. Since I don’t have to pay you back the burden of that debt is no longer on my shoulder, therefore your forgiveness did not set you free, it set me free.

Now think about Jesus on the cross. When He died that you might be forgiven who became free? Jesus Christ was already free. If He did not have a pure and free heart towards mankind there is no way He could forgive us. Therefore, you must understand that it is a selfish world that teaches you that forgiveness is something that makes you free. No, love makes you free. Forgiveness makes the forgiven free. The sooner you understand what forgiveness is the easier it will become. Forgiveness is a command from God. He requires that we forgive each other. It’s that simple. Place your hand upon your chest and say, God wants me to forgive and therefore in obedience to God I must forgive. Let it sink in and then decide to do it. Your decision to be obedient is the first step.

The second step to ask God to free your heart from hurt, bitterness, and pain, and fill that space with love. When you become free then forgiveness comes easy. Without a heart that is free forgiveness is impossible.
